- Free, with no gates and no ticket: the Sovrintendenza lists the Pincio promenade as open at all times, which is why no timetable appears here, and nothing needs booking. The shortest way up is the ramped path from the north-east corner of Piazza del Popolo, about five minutes of easy climb; there is also a lift from the Flaminio metro station for anyone who would rather not walk it. The terrace looks west over the piazza to the dome of St Peter's, so it is a sunset viewpoint and it fills up an hour beforehand. The Villa Borghese gardens behind it are free as well. The Galleria Borghese inside the park is not, and it admits only booked timed slots.
