Piazza del Popolo

Rome's front door, with a pharaoh's obelisk inside the northern gate.

Piazza del Popolo
Admission
The square is free and always open. Santa Maria del Popolo, in the corner by the gate, is free to enter but keeps short and awkward hours: Monday to Saturday 08:30 to 09:45, 10:30 to 12:00 and 16:00 to 18:00, and on Sundays and feast days 16:30 to 18:00 only. Visits are not allowed during Mass at any time. That makes the late afternoon the dependable slot for the two Caravaggios in the Cerasi Chapel, and it means a Sunday morning here will find the church shut to sightseers. Bring a euro or two in coins, since the chapel light is generally on a meter. Nothing here needs booking.
