The basilica keeps long daily hours, opening early and staying open into the evening, and it is one of the few churches in Rome you can reliably walk into at the end of the day. Through August it shuts over the middle of the day and reopens in the late afternoon. None of this could be confirmed against the parish's own site, which is currently broken, so if the church is the reason for your walk across the river, phone ahead rather than trust a timetable. Mass takes precedence over sightseeing at any hour: wait at the back rather than walking up the nave, and do not photograph during a service. Shoulders covered.
