- The basilica is free and needs no booking. The dome climb is ticketed and sold only at the desk on site — there is no online booking — and its entrance is outside, down into the moat on your left once you are past the security check. It is close to 300 steps with no lift, it keeps shorter hours than the basilica at both ends, it shuts at midday while the attendant takes a break, and the last climb goes up half an hour before the dome closes. Silence is asked for inside and photography in the nave is not allowed: adoration has continued at the altar, unbroken, since 1885.
