Plaça Reial

The one square in the old town with four matching sides — and two Gaudí lamps.

Admission and address

Address
Plaça Reial
Admission
Free and always open. The square is public ground, reached through short arcaded passages off La Rambla, and there is no ticket, no gate and nothing to book. The two lamp posts flanking the central fountain are early Gaudi, made when he was barely out of school, and they are the reason to stand still here for a minute. Every restaurant under the arcades is a terrace with tourist pricing and a menu in six languages, so the food is not the point of the square. It is lively and well lit in the evening, but the passages in and out are a known pickpocketing spot, and it stays loud very late, which matters if you have booked a room on it.
